Kalkidan Hoex

Artist biography

Adopted from Ethiopia and brought up in the Netherlands, I’ve always felt like my existence was lived in between two different worlds. I took it on my own to educate and explore the intricacies of my own identity and relate to others through my jewelry and other art forms.

I speak directly to those I consider part of my own identity. It is a certain group of people I came into contact with—youth of mixed descent who fled with their families from their native lands or were adopted. I focus on this group because, despite the differences in backgrounds and upbringings, they share and agree on many topics when it comes to the complex construction of our identity. This grew particularly due to my deeper exploration of the representation of black people in imagery, and where these two worlds overlapped, a third world was created. The objects I make are an expression of how I perceive my third world to comprehend my reality and create the illusion that I know where I belong.

The empowerment of storytelling that can resonate with your audience to stand representational, educational, and symbolical and that thrives strongly through my divers mediums of work is the growing factor behind TheNEWtribe.
